COMMAND AREA DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES UNDER HIRAKUD COMMAND AREA DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY IN THE DISTRICT OF SAMBALPUR.
The command area development programme was initiated in Hirakud
Command in the Sambalpur District in the year 1976-77 as a centrally sponsored
plan scheme with the aim of increasing agriculture production and productivity
in the command area through scientific water management practices.
The Hirakud command area development Authority spreads over 14 blocks
involving 5 blocks of Sambalpur, 6 blocks of Bargarh, 2 blocks of Sonepur and 1
block of Bolangir district with total culturable command area of 1.59
lakhs hectares. Out of this Sambalpur district involves 31420 Ha.
Including the urban area.
The following CAD schemes are being implemented in the field through CADA
with grant-in-aid consists of 50% central and 50% state share.

Construction of Field Drains
D.
Reclamation of water logged lands
E.

Demonstration
Topographical
survey is carried out departmentally by the technical staff in the total gross
command area of the project for fixing alignments for construction of field
channels and field drains in the farmers’ field.
Field
irrigation channels, both earthen and lined with provision of hydraulic
structures are being constructed through CAD division, Sambalpur below the out let level for better conveyance of irrigation water to
the farmers’ field in scientific manner with minimum losses. The status of
completed FC works are as follows.

Construction
of field drain helps in draining out excesses water from agriculture field to
main and trunk drains. This prevents over irrigation and there by increases
agricultural production and productivity. The status of construction of field
drain is as follows.

The
new scheme namely ‘Reclamation of water logged lands’ was included under CAD
programme to remove water logging in valuable agriculture land. Only one such
project namely Kultanuapali with benefited area of 48.45 Ha. has been completed.

Adoptive Trials
i) Farmer’s
Training
Farmers training camps are organised in villages to educate farmers in
water and crop management for achieving higher production through regulated
water supply.
ii) Demonstration
Crop and water management demonstration
are being adopted in farmers’ field to educate the farmers for diversification
of cropping.
